IOP vs. Residential Treatment

Adapted from the TribaLights guide by Phoenix Germano.

Matching care to your needs

The appropriate level of care depends on symptoms, safety, substance use, living environment, support, treatment history, and ability to participate consistently.

Intensive outpatient care

IOP provides structured treatment while you continue living at home or in another community setting. It can include group and individual therapy, psychoeducation, behavioral skills, recovery planning, safety planning, medication coordination, and peer support.

IOP may fit someone who can remain safe in the community, attend consistently, and does not need 24-hour supervision.

Residential treatment

Residential treatment combines care with a structured living environment. It may be considered when someone needs more supervision, stability, or support than outpatient care can provide. An individualized clinical assessment should guide this decision.

Community housing is a distinct option

Recovery housing can offer structure and peer support while a person attends outpatient or IOP services. TribaLights offers community housing connected to its programming for eligible participants. This is distinct from a residential treatment program.

Care can change over time

People may step up or down between services as their needs change. An assessment considers safety, symptoms, substance use, daily functioning, living environment, support, and goals.

TribaLights offers DBT-focused IOP with mindfulness and holistic practices, including remote participation options. You do not need to decide on a level of care before contacting intake.
